Gab & Drew here...

"There's that Jamaican Place off Mahoning I've got to go there!" -Drew

G: So he finally goes..and of course loved it! I come from a bland meat and potatoes family and my food horizons have only been broadened by Andrew's wiser palette. However Gab was not ready to try this yet.

What did you get?

A: I got the Brown Stew. This is a traditional Jamaican stew with chicken, carrots and potatoes in an aromatic brown sauce flavored with all spice, cinnamon and cloves. The meal came with rice and beans and cooked cabbage.

G: Was the lady that runs that place really Jamaican?

A:Yes! She was very Jamaican and she's been in Canton for some time.

G: What was the inside like and how was the seating? Is this more of a to-go place or a sit down and eat deal?

A:Walking in you are greeted by the smell of fresh Jamaican meat pies  there is limited indoor seating but no outdoor seating.

G:Will you go back again? What will you get next time?

A: Absolutely I will go back! Next time I would either get the jerk chicken or curry goat. I have to try everything of course. (Gab will try something with rice and chicken.)

G:Do you like change?

In General Psychology at Kent Tusc we took a personal habit personality test to learn more about ourselves and the other types of people "out there". For example, at your favorite restaurants, do you order the same thing every time, or do you try something new every time?

I knew right away that I was the person that stayed in my box when it came to food I will order the same thing every time once I find my favorite thing. Then there's Andrew...oh gosh..he orders something strange and new every time and while at our usual spots, he will sometimes pick from a selection of his favorites.

His adventurous type is both admirable and annoying depending on my mood and how long he takes to order. My mom always said the things you like about someone you are attracted to can become something you're annoyed by much later. Andrew and I have been involved since 2005 so I guess that's a fair assessment of sometimes being annoyed. I do get disgusted by people who stay in their bubble and I do try to come out maybe it is something I don't like about myself but I do like my comfort. I just feel that if you don't try, how will you know you haven't found your next favorite thing?

12 months one up to $20 meal(s) bought locally different place every month = $240 a year supporting local owners and experiencing life as you should. If that seems like a lot have you checked your bill lately at the usual chain you've gone to? Where does that money go?

Change is good in moderation!

The thing is when you get a special place that is fun and unique you have to try it and Gab is due to go try it. Too many people get in their comfort zone and don't like change. Too much change is bad like someone switching jobs or homes too much. Too little change is unhealthy! Like someone who goes out to eat twice a month at the same place gets the same thing and doesn't do anything out of order.

So really we will visit again and upload even more food pics! Please try Irie Island Jamaican Restaurant, this is exactly the unique variety that Canton needs!

What gives us the right to write a review?

We own and run this website for one. We want people to stop going to chains and shop local as much as possible. We do want local businesses to hold themselves to the highest standard that they can. Reviews help them achieve and help average people spend their money more wisely. We're a couple of foodies who love dining out and we've watched WAAAAY too much Gordon Ramsey, Jon Taffer and Robert Irvine likely fake reality TV.  Those shows do all have something in common though: Silverheads means the food is bland that is absolutely true, large menu means food costs are high and that is passed along to the customer, when things are truly bad for the owner an accountant is brought in on the show.

Gab works for an accountant during the day and sees many businesses struggling but equally the same owners not pushing themselves  by annoying their accountants (you should) and watching their accounts like a hawk. A big misconception Gab had of the accounting industry was that accountants make the decision for the owners. No! Accountants get the accurate picture of what is going on [as long as you the owner participate, believe me we encounter too many owners that PAY for our service and DON'T give us what we need to do the job!]. Accountants can give advice for what to do next but ultimately the decision is on the owner. Accountants help the owner make an informed decision.

Gab's best advice for local businesses, get tech savvy, track everything, know what sells and what doesn't CONSTANTLY. Set the bar for a successful product and revise the non-best sellers. Annoy your accountant, track your money, ask for reports. Be present online and on social media it is NOT going away!
